Painting of Townsend’s chipmunk (Tamias townsendii). Townsend's Chipmunk (Tamias townsendii) is a species of rodent in the squirrel family Sciuridae. It is found in Canada and the United States. Townsend's Chipmunk is named after John Kirk Townsend, an early 18th century ornithologist. Townsend's Chipmunk is between 5.5 and 6.5 inches, with a tail of 4 to 6 inches. It is one of the largest eastern chipmunk .Eeat many types of berries in summer, switching in late fall to acorns, maple seeds, and seeds of various conifers, and in winter to numerous types of subterranean fungi. It also eats some insects. Townsend’s Chipmunk lives in a burrow about 2 inches
